"I Was Told Surgery Was My Only Option. Here's What I Did Instead."
"I Was Told Surgery Was My Only Option. Here's What I Did Instead."
Sarah came to me at her lowest point.
She was in her mid-30s, a mother of two young children, and had been struggling with lower back pain for years. After an MRI confirmed a herniated disc at the lower lumbar spine, she tried everything her doctors suggested — including spinal injections. Instead of improving, her pain got worse. A follow-up scan showed the disc had deteriorated further.
Her GP had prescribed stronger medication. Her specialist was recommending surgery.
"I feel like I have no options," she told me. "Either I have the operation and hope for the best, or I just learn to live with the pain."
She was terrified. And exhausted. And desperate for another way.
The question she kept asking: "Will this disc ever heal on its own?"
The honest answer is: it depends on what you do next.
A herniated disc does not have to be a life sentence. The spine has a remarkable capacity to recover — but only when given the right conditions. Passive treatments alone (injections, medication, rest) cannot restore the structural balance your spine needs. In many cases, they mask the problem without addressing the root cause.
What the spine needs is active, consistent, self-directed movement that gradually restores its natural alignment.
This is exactly what SBM (Self Body Make) is designed to do.
What is SBM?
SBM is a Japanese spinal self-care method developed in Tokyo, now available exclusively in London. Unlike physiotherapy, chiropractic, or massage — where someone else works on your body — SBM teaches you to restore your spine's natural S-curve through precise, gentle movements you perform yourself.
The results speak for themselves:
⭐ "After more than 40 years of herniated disc pain, doctors told me surgery was the only option. I refused. Two years after starting SBM, I walk freely, stand tall, and am completely pain-free." — Client, LILY & GOLD LONDON
⭐ "My lumbar condition has completely healed. My straight neck has been corrected. SBM addresses the root cause — not just the symptoms." — Client, LILY & GOLD LONDON
Back to Sarah.
She decided to try SBM before making any surgical decisions.
Within weeks, she began noticing changes — less tension, more freedom of movement, and for the first time in months, a sense of hope.
She never had the surgery.
Is surgery ever necessary?
Sometimes, yes. In cases of severe nerve compression or loss of function, surgery may be the right choice — and we always encourage clients to work alongside their medical team.
But surgery should be an informed last resort — not the first option offered when conservative approaches haven't been properly explored.
If you are currently facing a herniated disc diagnosis and considering surgery, please ask yourself:
✔ Have I been given a structured, supervised self-care plan? ✔ Have I been shown how to move in ways that support — rather than compress — my disc? ✔ Have I explored methods that address the root cause of my spinal imbalance?
If the answer is no — there may still be another way.
We are currently accepting applications for our special 3-Month SBM Online Programme (April 2026), limited to 10 participants.
This programme is designed specifically for people living with herniated disc conditions who want to explore a natural, drug-free path to recovery — before or instead of surgery.
