 Don't Put Off Making Time for Your Body


Recently I had the chance to talk about SBM (Self Body Make) with an acquaintance who lives overseas.


As we spoke, they shared a story about one of their relatives. Some years ago, this person had surgery to place artificial joints in both hips. It is a procedure that uses metal and ceramic in the hip joint, but afterwards their body reacted poorly to it. They had to undergo surgery a second time, and they now live using a wheelchair.


"Hip replacement surgery keeps improving year by year — both the surgical techniques and the rehabilitation afterwards — so perhaps something like this is far less likely to happen these days." They offered this gentle caveat before telling me the story.


Hearing it, I have no wish to comment on causes or outcomes.


I simply felt, once again, how important it is to make time in our daily lives to face our bodies and care for them.


Our bodies are used a little each day, and they change a little each day. Rather than waiting until a real problem has set in and then scrambling, we can notice our posture and the small habits in how we move, and tend to them gently, little by little. It is these small, repeated acts of care that contribute to our wellbeing in the years ahead.
