Why Do Herniated Discs Occur? (Part 1)

One of the most common causes of herniated discs is poor sitting posture.

Most people do not sit with proper posture, and they tend to fall into two common sitting patterns that are harmful to the spine:

1️⃣ Slouching Forward – The upper body leans forward, causing the back to round significantly.

2️⃣ Leaning Back Excessively – Sitting on the front edge of the chair while reclining against the backrest.

Both postures share a common issue: the lower back curves inward, compressing the abdomen while the back rounds outward. This sustained forward pressure on the abdomen pushes the front of the intervertebral discs, forcing pressure to escape toward the back where the nerves are located. Over time, this constant strain weakens the fibrous rings at the back of the disc, leading to herniation.

Another shared issue is the excessive strain on the back muscles.

- In a slouched position, the head must be held up constantly, placing continuous tension on the neck and shoulder muscles.

- In a reclined position, the lower back and spine tend to sag downward, forcing the back and lumbar muscles to work constantly.

These conditions contribute to discomfort, fatigue, and pain from the neck to the lower back.

Additionally, these poor sitting habits negatively affect the neck. When the neck tilts forward relative to the chest, the cervical spine's alignment changes, increasing the risk of straight neck syndrome (loss of the natural curve) and herniated discs.

Everyday postures and movements, even those we perform unconsciously, have a profound and lasting impact on our bodies.

SBM Focuses on Lower Back and Neck Exercises

During SBM exercises, your body naturally maintains an S-curve while standing.

If you have a herniated disc, I recommend pausing your current exercises for now. Instead, let’s first focus on **rebuilding proper posture.
